Animating the problem vacant building in Hastings
The House of Hastings sits on Queens Road, a busy retail street and one of the main gateways to the town centre of Hastings. The large two story shop had previously been empty for the last 3 years and was on the council's hit list for the grotbusters scheme.
Meanwhile Space acquired the property in April 2010 and after volunteers being pulled in for a massive clear out opened to the community in May.
Local projects and individuals have been using the space since for workshops, events, exhibitions and general activity. The projects using the space have been:
Radiator has been running a range of interactive workshops with the community including making large fish for Dancing With Dabs.
Connecting Queens Road with Hastings' historical Old Town, the Stade Education Project has hosted Fisherman telling tales of the sea and fish net making classes.
Mostly used as the festivals headquarters, the project extended to use the shop for art installations and main information point about this fantastic art programme.
Hastings Urban Bikes have been working with East Sussex County Council to run a series of bike maintenance classes for young people.
The House of Hastings goes into it's second phase at the end of September where new projects will be using the space. If you are interested in the House of Hastings, please email Jessica at jcb@meanwhilespace.com.
